Robert’s experience propelled him to provide only the very best frames, lenses and eye care service to all of our patients

As a child, Robert Callander was captivated by the American television series The Six Million Dollar Man – a programme about a former astronaut with bionic implants. Although he had super strength and could run fast, it was his bionic eye that really caught Robert’s attention, as it could see up to 20 times better than a human eye.

Robert remembers this as a pivotal moment in which he first became interested in optics, and says that he has been fascinated ever since.

“ When the opportunity came along for me to train through one of the most respected practices in Dumfries, I was certain I had found not just a job, or even a career, but a vocation”
Robert Callander
Owner & Dispensing Optician

A few years later, after receiving his Dispensing Optician qualification in 1991, Robert moved straight into practice management with Lizars. Between the years of 1998 and 2001 Robert was the Business Development Manager for Rodenstock. When he left that role he decided the time was right to open up his own optical practice, and so Robert Callander Optician was born.

Robert’s previous experience both in practice and on the supply side of the industry clearly paid off as little more than a year after opening, we were awarded ‘Business Start-Up of The Year’ from the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce. The practice grew so fast that within three years we were forced to move to bigger premises to accommodate our growing client base. We had to make room for the frame displays and state-of-the-art equipment that Robert worked hard to source and acquire.

The practice is now almost fifteen years old and the current team of staff has been in place for almost a decade, providing great service and continuity of care to all our patients. Every member of our team is fully qualified to the highest possible level for their role, and are all full of energy, enthusiasm and excitement for providing excellent quality eyewear.
